Insider: Raiders believe Jimmy Garoppolo could still play Sunday

Although Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains in concussion protocol, there's still a chance he could play Sunday against the Chargers.

"The Raiders are optimistic that Jimmy Garoppolo can work his way through concussion protocol and play Sunday," wrote ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler. "He must clear five steps, including clearance from an independent neurologist, but the belief early in the week is Garoppolo is doing well. Brian Hoyer is in line to start should Garoppolo need more time."

During a Wednesday news conference,  Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels didn't rule out the possibility that Garoppolo will suit up against Los Angeles.

"Jimmy's here and available to do all that stuff in terms of the meetings," McDaniels said."Like I said, we'll go through practice and see how Jimmy progresses through the week."

Through three games, inconsistent play marred Garoppolo, as he threw more interceptions (six) than TDs (five) and posted a 51.6 QBR, close to the league average. However, he still gives the Raiders (1-2) the best chance to beat their AFC West rival.

Hoyer has a 16-24 starting record in 16 seasons, while fellow backup QB rookie Aidan O'Connell — a fourth-round pick out of Purdue — has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game.

Despite Hoyer's experience, the Raiders should consider starting O'Connell if Jimmy G can't play. The 25-year-old showed promise during the preseason, completing 43-of-62 passes (69.4%) for 482 yards and three TDs.

Developing a young backup with some upside is critical for Las Vegas, given Garoppolo's injury history. Over the past five seasons, the 31-year-old has missed 30 games with various injuries, such as an ACL tear, high ankle sprains and a broken foot.
