How Gary Sheffield, Chase Utley, Adrián González & More Former Dodgers Fared In 2024 Baseball Hall Of Fame Voting

Adrián Beltré, Todd Helton and Joe Mauer were elected into Cooperstown by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) as part of the 2024 Baseball Hall of Fame class.

That represents an improvement from 2023, when only Scott Rolen made up that year’s class in Hall of Fame voting.

Beltré was a heavy favorite to be enshrined in his first time appearing on the ballot, and that came to be in the form of receiving 95.1% of the vote. Helton garnered 79.7% and Mauer narrowly made the cutoff by appearing on 76.1% of the ballots.

Meanwhile, Billy Wagner fell just shy at 73.8%.

Hall of Fame candidates must be named on 75% of ballots cast in order to be inducted into Cooperstown. With 385 ballots submitted in 2024 voting, candidates needed to receive 289 votes in order to be elected.

Candidates may remain on the BBWAA ballot for up to 10 years so long as they are listed on at least five percent of ballots cast. There are 14 players from this year’s ballot who will be eligible again in 2025.

Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend 2024 is scheduled for July 19-22. Also due to be honored are Jim Leyland, who was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee at the Winter Meetings, Ford C. Frick Award winner Joe Castiglione and BBWAA Career Excellence Award winner Gerry Fraley.

How former Dodgers did in 2024 Baseball Hall of Fame voting

In addition to Beltré, there were seven players with varying ties to the Dodgers.

The group included Bobby Abreu, Adrián González, Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, Manny Ramírez, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. Of the aforementioned former Dodgers, only Sheffield and González fell off the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot for 2025.

In Sheffield’s case that was due to 2024 being his 10th and final year of eligibility on the BBWAA ballot. He garnered 63.9% of votes and now has his case revert to the BBWAA’s Historical Overview Committee in 2025, which will create the ballots for consideration by the Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee for the class of 2026.

Meanwhile, González only received three votes for the Hall of Fame, a paltry 0.8%.

Jones inched closer to possibly joining Cooperstown by appearing on 61.6% of 2024 ballots, Ramírez garnered 32.5% of votes, Utley received 28.8%, Rollins had 14.8% and Abreu rounded out the group of former Dodgers at 14.8% as well.
