What an offseason it’s been for coach Matt McMahon and LSU basketball. After landing a big-time recruiting win just last week, the purple and gold aren’t anywhere close to slowing down, most recently earning a transfer portal commitment from UT Martin guard Jordan Sears.

LSU basketball lands second blue chip transfer portal commitment of 2024 offseason

While we don’t yet know what the full LSU basketball roster will look like in 2024, it’s a pretty safe bet that they’ll be good to go at the guard positions.

Even despite having multiple losses at the position due to graduation, the Tigers have increased depth at a pretty significant rate, and are set to bring in at least four new guards in 2024, all of which are rated as a four-star or better.

Most recently, coach Matt McMahon and the Tigers gained a transfer portal commitment from former UT Martin guard Jordan Sears.

Initially being unranked coming out of high school, Sears has seen his stock rise at an impressive rate over the last four seasons, officially being rated as a four-star transfer portal commitment, according to 247Sports.

As a true senior for UT Martin in 2023-24, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound guard was practically impossible to stop on both ends of the floor. He recorded 21.6 points, 4.5 steals, 4.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game and in many ways was the main source of production for the Skyhawks this past year.

However, the most eye-popping thing about the talented guard out of Daytona Beach, FL, has been his ability to improve over these past four years. As a sophomore in 2021-22, Sears struggled greatly from beyond the arc, making just 21.1 percent of his three-point attempts. However, his issues from deep didn’t last long, and he dominated this past season, averaging 2.4 three-pointers per game while shooting 43.2 percent.

Sears is set to join an incredibly deep guard room, which includes rising sophomore Mike Williams III, transfer portal addition Cam Carter and current high school seniors Curtis Givens III and Vyctorius Miller.
